In 2001 the Section of Cardiac Anesthesia was formally designated as a Division of the Department of Anesthesiology. The division of Cardiac Anesthesia consists of Board Certified Anesthesiologists, who are faculty members of the UMDNJ-RWJMS Anesthesia Department that have a special interest in Cardiac Anesthesia. Our primary focus is to provide excellence in anesthesia care for patients who are to undergo heart or major thoracic vascular surgery. Other areas of great interest in our practice include education through our Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship program, anesthesia resident education and clinical research.

The Cardiac Anesthesia Division under the direction of Dr. Alann Solina provides dedicated care for over twelve hundred cardiac surgeries per year, including robotically assisted and minimally invasive cardiac surgery and cardiac transplantation. The division was integrally involved with a number of performance improvement projects that have enhanced the quality of care for our cardiac surgery patients. The division published several book chapters, numerous manuscripts and abstracts and made several presentations at national anesthesia meetings. The division also hosted a lecture series on echocardiography.
