The goal of the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship is to provide an academic environment and enough clinical substrate to ensure that the fellow achieves a level of autonomy in delivering anesthetic care for complex cardiac surgery while simultaneously being afforded the opportunity to participate in stimulating cardiac anesthesia research. The program features a flexible curriculum, which includes the following opportunities:
- Extensive clinical training in adult cardiac anesthesia
- Pediatric cardiac anesthesia rotation at Deborah Heart & Lung Institute
- Extensive clinical and formal didactic training in transesophageal echocardiography
- Rotation in Perfusion Service
- Participation in clinical and basic cardiac anesthesia research
- Rotation in Post Cardiac Surgery Unit
- Rotation in major vascular and thoracic surgery anesthesia
- Participation in interdepartmental lectures and conferences
- Oral board preparation
Fellows work directly with members of the cardiac anesthesia team. Each cardiac anesthesia attending is given a specific didactic assignment for each fellow. At the halfway point of each fellow's training, he/she is given a written exam. The purpose of this exam is to identify any shortcomings in training or education so that they can be remedied before completion of the fellowship.
Fellowships generally begin in July and January and last 6-12 months. Exceptions can be made on an individual basis. Fellows do participate in a relatively light overnight call for general anesthesia (2-4 times/month), and they are given the day off after call.
Cardiac anesthesia fellows must have a N.J. Medical License before they commence their fellowship. Fellowship candidates must submit an application which can be obtained by:
