Dr. Mordechai Bermann serves as Section Head of Ambulatory Anesthesia. The ambulatory surgery or same day surgery unit is located on the first floor of the Core Pavilion. It consists of five operating rooms in an attached facility to the main operating room area. All surgical specialties are represented in the ambulatory surgical caseload.
Dr. Steven Ginsberg continues to direct the anesthesia team providing services for the cardiac transplant program, which was established in 1998. The frequency of cases has increased dramatically. Through a multidisciplinary approach of the cardiac transplantation surgical team with the assistance and expertise of many nursing fields, respiratory therapy, perfusion team and operating room, the service is able to offer a very rapid and streamlined approach toward the patient in need of a heart transplant.
Dr. John Denny is the anesthesia section chief for the Surgical and Trauma ICU which has a 90% unit occupancy rate. Dr. Denny continues to participate in the teaching of Advanced Trauma Life Support courses to doctors from the tri-state region. Clinical research projects are ongoing.
Dr. Christine Hunter, Associate Professor and Acting Chairman, continues to be Chief of the Neuroanesthesia section. The case load of Neuroanesthesia cases was approximately 729 during the past academic year
Dr. Shaul Cohen is the Section Chief of Obstetric Anesthesia. The obstetric patients at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital continue to receive "state of the art" obstetric anesthesia care. There are approximately nineteen hundred deliveries per year at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. About ninety one percent of the patients received epidural blocks.
The Pediatric Anesthesia Team under Dr. Enrique Pantin's direction continues to perform its assigned task as patient volume has increased concurrently with the increased pediatric services. The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital opened the Pediatric Same Day Surgery Unit. With the establishment of this unit, all personnel involved in anesthesia care now have a centralized location where they can evaluate all pre- and postoperative pediatric patients. Parental presence during induction of anesthesia has increased making the hospital experience less traumatic for the children.
Dr. Mark Stein is the chief of the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. Anesthesia residents, as part of their required training, must rotate for two weeks through the PACU with "hands on" case management and discussion. Patient volume continues to grow on an annual basis.
Dr. Vincent DeAngelis is section head of Vascular Anesthesia. This section continues to provide anesthesia for cutting edge surgical techniques. The vascular team continues to follow the national trend by using transesophageal echocardiography on abdominal aortic aneurysms instead of pulmonary artery catheters.
