About the School Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Department of Anesthesia -
-

Both clinical and basic science research are done by the faculty of the Department of Anesthesia. The basic science effort is concentrated into the following three areas:

  • The use of various anesthetics and intravenous adjuvants to characterize the susceptibility of the blood brain barrier to disruption and effects on neurologic outcome in central nervous system ischemia.
  • An examination of the role of cyclic nucleotides in myocardial ischemia and hypertrophic cardiomyopathies.

Clinical research studies include the effect of various anesthetics or pharmacological agents on patient outcomes in anesthesia and surgery. These include investigations of the new ultra short-acting narcotic, remifentanil and its use in neurosurgery and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy; of the value of inhaled nitric oxide in patients with pulmonary hypertension in cardiac surgery; on the efficacy of various modalities in the treatment of chronic pain syndromes; on the enhancement of efficacy of epidural analgesia in parturients; of airway management policies and education on outcome in critically ill patients; on the management of anticoagulation and analgesia in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass and the use of simulation training in critical care medicine education.
