Throughout our 20 years, we have been able to successfully recruit talented faculty with diverse interests and who have much enthusiasm. In addition, we have been fortunate to attract superb residents who have proudly trained here, and our residency program was awarded ongoing full accreditation for an additional 4-year term beginning in 2007.

We are committed to developing exceptional clinicians. Research Opportunities:
The Department of Anesthesia has a very active clinical and laboratory research program. Residents are encouraged to gain research experience by participating in research projects, making presentations at anesthesia meetings, and writing papers for publication. A CLINICAL SCIENTIST TRACK offering two options in the advanced CA-3 year is available. Residents have a choice of participating in a number of clinical research studies or gaining experience in a basic science laboratory. Laboratory experience may include the following: molecular mechanisms of intracellular Ca+2 regulation, dantrolene activity and malignant hyperthermia; the molecular biology of excitatory amino acids in the central nervous system; the pharmacology of phosphodiesterase inhibition; and the cerebral effects of nitric oxide inhibition (vide infra).Laboratories are located on the New Brunswick and Piscataway campuses where many of the department's investigators have their own laboratories or collaborate on projects with the faculty of the Departments of Pharmacology, and Physiology and Biophysics of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Department of Biomedical Engineering of Rutgers University, and/or with the investigators from various Pharmaceutical Companies.

Application Process:
Applications for July 2008 are no longer being accepted.  In September 2007 we will accept applications through ERAS for residency beginning in July 2009.
Applicants are invited from graduating fourth year medical students from approved United States and Canadian medical schools. Candidates graduating from foreign medical schools are evaluated on an individual basis.   The medical school accepts J-1 Visa's only.  The UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Anesthesia Program accepts applications through the AAMC Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) only. Please contact your medical school for information regarding the process for submitting application materials.
