INTRODUCTION

The Center for Biostatistics was formed in 1997 to provide a source of statistical support and consultation for the UMDNJ academic community and its affiliations. It addresses three missions: Collaborations, Research, and Teaching.

The Center's administrative offices are located at Rm 2008 within the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, RWJ Medical School, 195 Little Albany Street, New Brunswick, and at Rm 2212 of the Liberty Plaza, 335 George street, UMDNJ-School of Public Health, New Brunswick.

COLLABORATIVE SERVICES

Statistics is an integral part of modern medical research. The Center provides the following collaborative and service functions:

The Center maintains a full-service statistical consulting facility. This facility provides experimental design services, design and implementation of database (data entry and data management) services, quality control and assurance, power and sample size calculation, statistical analyses, and scholarly writing. Initial consultation and service on small projects is free.

Ph.D. biostatistics faculty members are available to collaborate with researches in writing grant proposals, and preparing major research projects. Students registered for the Biostatistics Consulting course may be assigned and supervised by faculty members to appropriate projects.

The Center welcomes the opportunity to work with other researchers to compete for statistical coordinating center grants.

BIOSTATISTICS RESEARCH

Independent biostatistics research is a integral part of any credible biostatistics program. Faculty capable of developing or adapting statistical methods to the changing needs of medical research are needed for appropriate analysis of many studies.

COLLABORATION AND SERVICES

Collaboration works best when the statisticians care consulted during the design phase of a project. Data salvage is always more difficult, expensive and problematic than data analysis. The earlier the Center is brought into the project, the easier and less expensive it is to work on the resulting data.

DATA ENTRY AND DATA MANAGEMENT

The Center is available to perform data entry and data management services for a fee. Appropriate organization of data entry and data management is central to obtaining optimum utilization of data.

It is common for investigators to enter their own data using spreadsheets. Please contact the Center before entering your own data to ensure that the data are compatible with our software, and are in a form that will be the least expensive and most effective to use.

TEACHING

Center personnel teach bisotatistics as part of the undergraduate medical school curriculum, as well as graduate courses in the UMDNJ - School of Public Health. Center faculty also teach students in a variety of other departments. Faculty welcome the opportunity to develop more resident and graduate school courses.

Center faculty are also available to develop and co-teach inservice courses with other faculty for medical school personnel who might benefit from such courses. Such courses might include material on research methods, biostatistics, research data management, and grantsmanship.

Students registered for the Biostatistics Consulting course as a part of the Biometrics track at UMDNJ-School of Public Health curriculum are assigned and supervised by faculty members for appropriate projects.

FEE SCHEDULE

With the help of CINJ and UMDNJ-SPH, initial consultations will be provided at no charge. This first step of consultation is to understand and discuss the scope of further collaboration. For more extensive projects, please contact us for fees.

Large scale collaboration (e.g., grant proposals) may be handled on a negotiated basis. If a grant will include a significant funded role for the Center, the Center will collaborate in the writing of that proposal at no charge when no seeding fund is available.
