Alejandro Interian, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychiatry at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He graduated from the University of Florida (B.S.) in 1995 and received his doctoral degree at Nova Southeastern University (2001). His postdoctoral training was completed at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (2002) in the Department of Psychiatry. During his postdoctoral training, he was involved in an NIMH-funded study evaluating the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy for somatization. He also conducted psychiatric diagnostic interviews for the National Latino and Asian American Study. In 2003, Dr. Interian received a Young Investigator Award from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) to study culturally-adapted cognitive-behavioral therapy for Hispanic primary care patients with major depression. In 2005, Dr. Interian received a Career Development Award from the National Institute of Mental Health to study antidepressant adherence among Hispanic patients. As part of the study, he is adapting a Motivational Interviewing approach for improving antidepressant adherence among Hispanic patients with depression. He is also beginning to study the issue of stigma among Latinos with depression. Currently, Dr. Interian is also a practicing clinical psychologist within the Department of Psychiatry.
