Clinical Programs

Faculty

All clinical activities are conducted by the faculty and staff of the Division of Occupational Health. The Division has six full time physician faculty (Kipen, Gochfeld, Udasin, Osinubi, Laumbach and Greene) and one PhD Clinical Psychologist (Fiedler).

Environment

The majority of clinical activities occur in the Clinical Center of EOHSI. This is a 5000 square foot facility on the first floor of the EOHSI building. It has two wet exam rooms, one wet treatment room, two consultation/interview rooms, two physician offices (one devoted to academic rather than clinical activity), a phlebotomy lab, EKG room, audiometry booth, spirometry room, a waiting area, small conference room, reception/secretary office, office supervisor office, program administrator office, and adequate space for nurses and other staff.

Patient Increases

The patients seen by the division fall into two major groups, and then a number of subgroups. Sometimes clinic visits are closely intertwined with consultative activity that is not billed through the clinic, but is submitted to UMG. The major group, accounting for the majority of patient visits is the Employee Health Service with 3614 visits in academic 1999, of which 1362 occurred in the Clinical Center, the remainder in New Brunswick. The other patients are contract and fee for service visits to the clinical center. Major groupings are Medical Surveillance Exams largely seen by Dr. Udasin with 240 in 1999, Referral Clinic which includes physician referrals , self-referrals, independent medical exams,(seen all MD faculty, but a majority by Dr. Kipen), and special screenings of exposed individuals organized on an ad hoc basis, for 394 visits in 1999. Occasionally the latter are performed in other locations at the convenience of the patients About 150 visits per year also occur for research study patients related to protocols within EOHSI. In general, other than the rapid increase in EHS activity, other categories of visits are fairly constant.

Clinical Activities of all Faculty

Howard Kipen, MD, MPH, is the director of the Clinical Center. He oversees all clinical activity, and attends Tuesday mornings at referral clinic and participates in ad hoc screenings, and provides B readings of X-rays for pneumoconiosis. He also oversees support for Controlled Exposure Facility (CEF) studies which rely on clinical resources.

Iris Udasin, MD, has the larges clinical commitment in the division. Her main obligation is to the Employee Health Service, which she directs as well as provides the bulk of hands on physician care. She also attends at some Tuesday referral clinics and is responsible for the Agfa contract.

Omowunmi Osinubi, MD, Msc, attends at referral clinic and provides coordination of support for the Controlled Exposure Facility.

Michael Gochfeld, MD, PhD, attends at referral clinic and participates in ad hoc screenings.

Nancy Fiedler, PhD, performs neuropsychological evaluations, largely in relation to toxic exposures, and also does a limited amount of individual psychotherapy, again largely in relation to toxic exposure issues.

Robert Laumbach, MD, PhD, attends at referral clinic and participates in ad hoc screenings.
