Medical
Student Education:
One of the primary education goals
for our department is to provide an experience for medical students
that is not only exciting and educational, but is an accurate picture
of what emergency medicine is all about. During this year, we are
working to improve the experiences of the medical students during
their brief stay with a structured schedule and required case write
ups to improve the amount of material absorbed during the elective.
As we prepare for RWJMS's mandatory 4 week rotation in Emergency
Medicine that begins with the 2007-2008 academic year, we are further
structuring the rotation to include a lecture series and required
specific clinical experiences the student must complete prior to
the end of their rotation. These enhancements will improve the educational
value of this rotation as well as add consistency to the rotation
from one group to the next.
Rotator Experiences:
We are also improving
the quality of the EM experience for residents rotating to us from
other residency fields. By having consistent expectations for each
resident rotating in the department, we anticipate the residents
will learn more from the rotation and have a better understanding
of the field of emergency medicine.
Emergency
Ultrasound Elective (Fourth Year Medical Students)
On
September 19 th 2007 the Department of Emergency Medicine received
approval to start a new Emergency Department Ultrasound elective.
Under the leadership of our Director of Emergency Ultrasound, Dr.
Rajesh Geria, students will have a unique opportunity to learn how
to perform and interpret bedside ultrasound in the Emergency Department
clinical setting. This experience is only offered at a handful of
universities across the nation and will surely be an outstanding
experience. The elective may be scheduled for 2 or 4 weeks and is
limited to two fourth year students per block. Please contact Diane
Wormann at 732-235-8783 or wormandi@umdnj.edu for further information
or Dan Ostin at 732-235-4565 to register for the course. The course
number is: EMED 9010.

EMERGENCY RESIDENCY
Our most ambitious project
is the creation of a new emergency medicine residency based at RWJMS
in New Brunswick. We are actively planning the curriculum, hiring
faculty and assessing potential funding sources. After reviewing
the patient population at RWJUH, we are confident that potential
residents will have ample exposure to all illnesses and injuries
and are confident in our ability to gain approval by the residency
review committee. Please stay tuned for further information on our
future residency program.
