What We Are About
The Department of Pathology Electron Microscopy Laboratory offers
state-of-the-art equipment and expertise for the current needs
of the department, the Medical School,
Robert Wood Johnson Universty Hospital,
Rutgers University, and
private sector users.
Equipment
The Electron Microscopy Lab facility is organized into three major sections: The first
section constitutes the general specimen preparation area for processing samples for
routine scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Minor pieces of equipment
included with this area are: Edwards vacuum evaporator, critical point dryer, sputter
coater, glow discharge unit, JB4 microtome, a microwave processing station and
an IEC cryostat. A Reichert Ultracut E for ultrathin sectioning is also available.
The second major section of the facility involves three darkrooms. Two rooms are
equipped for printing and a variety of photographic techniques. The third room is
restricted to photocopying and slide production. Two photocopying stands are
available for general use.
The final section of the facility consists of the microscopes. The current microscopes
in use are: the Amray 1400 scanning electron microscope, JEOL 1200EX microscope
and the Philips 420 transmission electron microscope. A Balzers freeze-etch system is
also available. The Amray 1400 is a versatile scanning electron microscope. High
resolution imaging of thin or thick (0.5um) sections can be obtained with the Philips
420 TEM or a JEOL 1200EX equipped with video cameras, which are integrated to
the BioImaging Laboratory with resources for image processing.
Services
The facility is organized to encourage the use of equipment by individual users
both within and outside the university. Individual and small-group instruction
in the use of equipment and in electron microscopy techniques is provided to faculty,
staff, post-doctoral fellows and residents. In addition, electron microscopy services
are available. Examples of some of the services provided are: Routine sample
preparation for transmission and scanning electron microscopy, including specimen
preparation, specimen observation and photography; low temperature embedding for
immunoelectron microscopy; ultrathin sectioning; cryosectioning for immunolight
microscopy; negative staining and rotary shadowing.
