   Laboratory Safety Incidents

This site - One of the goals of the AIHA Laboratory Health and Safety Committee is to collect and make available a compilation of laboratory safety incidents. may be used by health and safety professionals, faculty, supervisors, students and any others who may benefit from these "lessons learned". We have attempted to list the key safety and health teaching concepts/principles for each of the incidents listed.

The incident summaries were obtained from submissions contributed by personnel involved in laboratory health and safety as well as from information posted on listservs or on the internet (with permission).  All identifying information has been removed.

If you have laboratory safety or health incidents that you would be willing to share with others, perhaps those that you feel are especially valuable for student or employee training,  which emphasize key safety concepts/principles and have specific corrective action, please review the recommended format.   Then strip your entry of any identifying reference to persons or institutions and e-mail  to Ken_Kretchman@ncsu.edu for review. The only editing we plan for submittals would be removal of person or institution identifying information or the addition of key learning points, if not provided, for indexing purposes. As you review the various incidents included, note that the formats vary. This is to limit editing on your part or ours.

Other Links - Below we have also included links to several other sites which contain health and safety incident information. Although some of these contain incidents which are well beyond lab scale, the safety concepts may also apply to the research lab environment. If you know of other sites with accessible safety and health incident summaries we would appreciate your letting us know about them.
