AIHA Lab Health and Safety Committee
Minutes of the Midyear Meeting:  October 19, 2001
Cambridge, Massachusetts

 In attendance: Pam Greenley, Chair, Lindsey Kayman, Vice Chair, and Joseph Passante, incoming Secretary (2002).

The Lab Health & Safety Committee roster for 2002 was submitted to the national office. Three new members were added to the Lab Health & Safety Committee, which will have 28 members.

The Committee’s Business Plan was discussed.

It was agreed that a permanent archive of Lab Health & Safety Committee business documents be established. The archive will be the responsibility of the Chair and will include minutes, business plans, budgets and notes.

A change in the format of the Lab Health & Safety Committee meeting at the 2002 AICHE was discussed and approved. Working Groups will be established and will meet during a portion of the meeting to work on the following topics:

Group 1. Update of the Lab Health and Safety section of Essential Resources for Industrial Hygiene: A Compendium of Current Practice Standards and Guidelines.

Group 2. Establish a collection of Laboratory Audit Checklists.

Group 3. Review/update  the Lab Health & Safety Committee Web page.

Group 4. Develop a document that discusses how to develop on-line training.

Committee officers will approach Committee members to take leadership roles in the work groups listed above.

The Lab Health & Safety Committee is sponsoring two programs at the 2002 AIHCE: a roundtable on lab decommissioning organized by Liz Gross; a PDC "Safety, Health and Environmental Issues in Research Laboratories", presented by Todd W. Bake of EPA, Daniel J. Hurley, David Lumby, and Joe Passante.

The following action items were established:

Pam Greenley will work with Dave Lumby regarding the technical session meeting and Leadership conference.

Lindsey Kayman will invite a representative from AIHA Publications to discuss publications at the June Lab Health & Safety Committee meeting.

Lindsey Kayman will add a section to the Lab Health & Safety Committee web page for Lab Health & Safety Committee business and add committee notes to that section

All Lab Health & Safety Committee officers: Complete a list of critical dates and responsibilities for Lab Health & Safety Committee business.

Lindsey Kayman will request space for the Lab Health & Safety Committee meeting at the 2002 AIHCE
