Regulatory Standards and Guidelines (top)

29 CFR 1910.1450 is the OSHA Lab Standard, Occupational Expousre to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories.  Please carefully review the scope of this standard to see if your operations meet the definition of "laboratory" and "laboratory scale."  For operations outside of the scope of this standard, see the substance specific monitoring requirements in 29 CFR 1910.1000 (Subpart Z). Please note that the OSHA Lab Standard includes a requirement to identify "circumstances under which a particular laboratory operation, procedure, or activity shall required prior approval…"  A hazard assessment program needs to accompany your health exposure program to be effective in reducing risk. If you have referenced the threshold planning quantity tables of the OSHA Process Safety Management standard (29 CFR 1910.119) and have no operations which fall under the scope of the regulation, you are nonetheless highly encouraged to closely review the content of the standard. The principles and procedures contained in this regulation will be effective in reducing the frequency of laboratory incidents and can serve as the basis for key hazard assessment training for students and other laboratory employees.
