SEEK EARLY TREATMENT: If you are experiencing the clinical symptoms described in the section entitled "types of musculoskeletal disorders and injuries, "(ie: neck, shoulder, back, or wrist discomfort), it is important to seek prompt medical attention to prevent permanent damage.

There are many causes for musculoskeletal disorders including, but not limited to, conditions that are hereditary or developmental in nature, arthritic changes, changes linked to diseases or other medical conditions as well as conditions related to sporting activities or to an individual's hobbies.

Certain conditions may be work-related. The standard for a MSD to be deemed causally related to the work-environment is that the work environment would have to contribute to the development of the MSD to a material and significant degree and, in addition, the work-site characteristics that may contribute to an MSD must be peculiar to the occupation or place of employment.

If an employee believes that their condition may be related to their work-environment, they should contact the University's Risk and Claims Management Department (Risk Management). If appropriate, the employee may be referred for an independent medical examination (IME) to determine if the symptoms meet the afore-mentioned standard for a work-related injury.

TO OBTAIN MEDICAL TREATMENT: On all campuses, the employee and supervisor completes an incident report if the employee thinks that he/she may have sustained a work-related injury or illness. The incident report is provided to Risk Management, in order that the circumstances can be investigated and, if appropriate, Risk Management will arrange for the employee to be seen for an authorized IME (medical evaluation) for the purpose of determining if the symptoms are causally related to the work environment. If the injury/illness is determined to be causally related to the work environment, Risk Management will authorize appropriate medical follow-up under Workers' Compensation. Copies of incident reports should be forwarded to EOHSS.
