Glare

A direct or reflected light can produce a bright spot on the computer screen which may contribute to eye discomfort or loss in visual performance and visibility. Below are some of the steps that can be taken to eliminate and reduce glare on the computer:

  • Set up the workstation with the computer display perpendicular to the window. Avoid placing the display so that the user is sitting in front or behind the window.

  • Use parabolic louvers on the overhead lights and tilt the monitor slightly forward to avoid images of the light fixtures on the screen.
  • Shine the task lamp directly onto the documents, not onto the screen or into the eyes. Adjust the brightness of the task light to improve contrast and avoid glare.
  • All windows should be fitted with blinds or shades capable of redirecting or blocking light.
  • Walls should be painted with non-glossy matte-finish to avoid light reflection.
  • Use a glare screen if the above methods do not eliminate the glare.
