Thomas V. Whalen, M.D., received his AB and MD degrees from Boston University. In 1999 he completed a Masters of Medical Management degree program at the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management of Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Whalen is Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and also holds an adjunct appointment in the Department of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve in February 0f 2001 after twenty-eight years as a commissioned officer in the medical corps of the Regular and Reserve Navy. Dr. Whalen is Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Program of the General Surgery Residency. In addition, he is Surgeon-in-Chief of the Bristol-Myers-Squibb Children's Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. He is Board Certified in the disciplines of General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care. Dr. Whalen is the author of more than forty publications. He has chaired medical ethics committees at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia, Cooper Health System, and Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center (both in Camden, NJ).
