Family Medicine Observership
The Department of Family Medicine, UMDNJ: Robert Wood Johnson Medical School invites international medical graduates to do a Continuing Education Observership in our department.
Family Medicine Observership Application
The Goals of Our Continuing Education Observership Program are:
- Exposure to the U.S. healthcare system in an academic setting.
- Experience in evidence-based primary care medicine.
- Interaction with family medicine faculty, residents, and medical staff in an academic environment.
- Training to use U.S. medical library resources both electronic and printed.
Some Things that an Observer Will Gain:
- An understanding of the U.S. healthcare system in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- The use of electronic medical records in the U.S. healthcare system.
- Comfort with the practices and procedures of American medicine.
- A basic understanding of evidence-based medicine in primary care.
- Presentation skills consistent with the U.S. format.
How Will This Be Achieved?
- In one-on-one interactions with residents and attending physicians
- During inpatient rounds at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital
- In our outpatient clinic
- During our regular Friday residency lecture series
Curriculum for One to One Lecture / Discussion Series
- Admitting
- SOAP notes
- Labs/Consultants
- Discharging patients
Goals of Discussion Series
- Discuss the basics of hospital medicine and patient management.
- Cover in detail the mechanics of functioning in U.S. hospital including admissions and SOAP notes
- Answer questions the student may have regarding U.S. hospital medicine
- Provide a faculty bond / support for the student

Observerships are offered for a period of four weeks with no more than two observers at a time. Observers are responsible for all expenses including transportation, housing, food, health insurance, immunizations and UMDNJ: Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Department of Family Medicine observer fees. New Jersey state law does not allow observers to participate in the direct care of patients.
