Electives

Alternative and Complementary Medicine

Course Goal

To increase exposure to and understanding of a variety of complementary and alternative medicine practices and systems.

This non-credit elective is offered every fall semester and is designed for second year medical students and physician assistant students. Ten lunchtime presentations are offered as well as an additional session for presentation of student field projects. Medical students must attend 70% of the sessions and complete a focused field project in order to receive a transcript notation of having completed the elective.

Lunchtime speakers include both physician and non-physician practitioners. Speakers generally describe the history and theory of a complementary modality, the research concerning safety and efficacy, and discuss applications. Demonstrations are included when feasible.

Contact Ms. Lisa Dooley for a current schedule.

Subinternship in Family Practice (fourth year elective)

This four-week inpatient experience places students at one of our network residency programs in New Jersey to work under the supervision and guidance of family practice residents and full time faculty members. Students are assigned patients to manage and given significant responsibility for their care, including performance of histories and physicals, writing orders and daily progress notes. There is a special emphasis on decision making, inpatient management, and utilizing the problem-oriented format. In addition, students take part in all educational programs in connection with the family medicine residency training program. Students also spend small amounts of time in the family practice office following up patients discharged from the hospital.

Students must register for the Subinternship in Family Practice through the Registrar and MUST see or email Ms. Lisa Dooley in the Family Medicine office to make specific arrangements for the subinternship location. Location is assigned through the Family Medicine office - not through the Registrar.

Other Fourth Year Electives

The Department offers several other fourth year electives: Family Practice Preceptorship, Rural Family Medicine, Geriatrics, Research in Family Medicine, Sports Medicine and Practical Skills for State Health Policy-Making. Students may arrange Individually Designed Electives through the department in such areas as Complementary Medicine, International Health, Health Care Financing, and Community Medicine.
