Student Advising

Several faculty members serve as student advisors both formally and informally. All department faculty are available to provide valuable career counseling and support to students. Faculty can be reached by email.

Joyce Afran, M.D.

Dr. Afran joined the department in 1994. She is a graduate of Muhlenburg College and Jefferson Medical College. After her residency in Family Practice, she spent a number of years in private practice. She directs the Department's Predoctoral Programs. Joyce Afran

Maria Ciminelli, M.D.

Dr. Ciminelli joined the department in 1999. She received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and her medical degree from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. Her interests include prevention, health care of children and patient satisfaction issues. Maria Ciminelli

John Clabby, Ph.D.

Dr. Clabby is a graduate of Fordham University and received his masters in Psychology from Montclair State. He received his doctoral degree in school psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi. He has special expertise in social problem solving. His training has included hypnotherapy, behavorial therapy, conflict resolution and time-limited psychotherapy. John Clabby

Benjamin Crabtree, Ph.D.

Dr. Crabtree joined the department in 1999 as Research Director. He received his undergraduate training at Washington College, his masters in Applied Anthropology from the University of Southern Florida and his doctoral degree in Medical Anthropology from the University of Connecticut. His expertise is in qualitative and health outcomes research. Benjamin Crabtree

Alicia Dermer, M.D.

Dr. Dermer joined the department in 1985. She received her undergraduate and doctoral degrees from the University of Toronto. After her residency in Family Practice, she joined the department and has a special interest in lactation issues. Alicia Dermer

Betty Hammond, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Hammond joined the department in 1983 and is a member of the Department's Office of Education. Dr. Hammond is a graduate of Douglass College of Rutgers University, and of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She completed her residency at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and subsequent public health training in the area of health care organization and administration. Betty Hammond

Cathryn Heath, M.D.

Dr. Heath joined the department in 1996. She is a graduate of Lehigh University and received her M.D. from Hahnemann University. Following her family practice residency at St. Vincent's Family Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania, she was in private practice in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Heath has special interests in Family-Centered Obstetrical Care and women's heath issues. Cathryn Heath

John Heath, M.D.

Dr. Heath joined the department in 1996. He is a graduate of Gannon University and received his M.D. from Hahnemann University. His family practice residency at St. Vincent's Family Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania was followed by fellowship training in geriatrics and faculty development at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Dr. Heath is Co-Director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship. John Heath

David Howarth, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Howarth is a graduate of Ohio State University where he received his bachelors in psychology. He completed undergraduate medical education at St. Georges University. His residency in Family Practice in New Jersey was followed by fellowship training in geriatrics and public health at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He is Medical Director of our Family Practice Center and the Director of fellowship programs. David Howarth

Paula Krauser, M.D., M.A.

Dr. Krauser joined the department in 1993 and is a graduate of Rutgers University. She received her Masters in Psychology from Brandeis and her M.D. from Rutgers Medical School. Following family medicine residency, she was in private practice for several years. She also completed a Health Policy Fellowship. She has interests in Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Steve Levin, M.D.

Dr. Levin joined the department in 1989. A graduate of Brown University, he received his M.D. at Emory and completed his residency training at Medical University of South Carolina. Following a faculty development fellowship at University of North Carolina, he joined the department as medical director of St. John's Family Health Center. He has a special interest in community health issues. Steve Levin

Jeffrey P. Levine, M.D., M.P.H

Dr. Levine joined the department in 1996. He is a graduate of Syracuse University where he received his bachelors in biology and psychology. He completed undergraduate medical education at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. After completing his Family Medicine residency in New Jersey, he completed a Women's Health fellowship at RWJMS and an MPH from the NJGPPH. He has special interests in women's health issues and procedural training. Jeffrey Levine

Robert Like, M.D., M.S

Dr. Like joined the department in 1984. He completed his undergraduate studies at Dartmouth, and received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Like completed Residency in Family Medicine at Case Western Reserve and subsequently, a Robert Wood Johnson Fellowship at the same institution. He has special interest and expertise in medical anthropology, and directs the Department's Center for Healthy Families and Cultural Diversity . Robert Like

Karen Lin, M.D., M.S.

Dr. Lin completed her family practice residency at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 1992. She received her B.S. in medical technology from National Taiwan University, and an M.S. in environmental science from Rutgers University. She was graduated from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 1989 and has a special interest in women's health issues, procedures and Complementary Medicine, including acupuncture. Karen Lin

Barbara Jo McGarry, M.D.

Dr. McGarry was graduated from Rutgers University and received her M.D. from New Jersey Medical School. She completed her residency at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 1991. She is an Assistant Director of the Residency and teaches numerous didactic sessions including common ambulatory problems and board review. Barbara Jo McGarry

Lisa Mellor, M.D.

Dr. Mellor completed her family practice residency at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 1995 and is Director of Student Health for the Medical School. She completed her undergraduate education at Rutgers University and received her M.D. at Robert Wood Johnson. She has additional interests in school health and urgent care. She is Associate Medical Director of our Family Practice Center. Lisa Mellor

Robert Monaco, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Monaco is a part-time faculty member and Director of Sports Medicine for Rutgers University. He received his undergraduate degree from Columbia University, his medical degree from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School and his Master's in Public Health from the New Jersey Graduate Program in Public Health. John Orzano, M.D.

Dr. Orzano joined the department in 1995. He received a B.S. in biology from Georgetown University and his M.D. from Georgetown University Medical School. His Family Medicine residency in New Jersey was followed by years of private practice. He has special interests in Primary Care and Outcomes Research.

Beatrix Roemheld-Hamm, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Hamm is a graduate of the University of Mainz (Germany) Medical School. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Heidelberg. She graduated from the Robert Wood Johnson Family Medicine Residency and has special interest in the doctor patient relationship and Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Beatrix Roemheld-Hamm

Marian Stuart, Ph.D.

Dr. Stuart is Director of Behavioral Sciences. She joined the department in 1978. She received her undergraduate degree from Kean College, and her doctoral degree in psychology from Rutgers University. She has extensive interest and experience in applied behavioral therapy for the primary physician. Dr. Stuart received the prestigious "Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Excellence in Education" award in 1997. Marian Stuart

David Swee, M.D.

Dr. Swee is Chair of the Department of Family Medicine. He received his undergraduate degree from Grinnell College and his M.D. from the Dalhousie University Medical School in Canada. After completing his family practice residency in New Jersey, Dr. Swee joined the department in 1977. Dr. Swee has a special interest in prevention, and has written extensively on pre-doctoral training in Family Medicine. David Swee

Alfred Tallia, M.D., M,P.H.

Dr. Tallia is Vice Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine. He received his undergraduate degree from Fordham University, and his medical degree from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. After completing his family medicine residency and fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, he joined the department in 1982. He received his public health degree in health care organization and administration and has research interest in health systems and quality of care. Alfred Tallia
