Our Faculty

Martha H. Lansing, MD, Program Director
Director Family Health Center
Associate Professor

Dr. Lansing has been director of the Residency Program since 1997 and has facilitated the growth of the program into the fully accredited Family Medicine Residency training program that it is today.

She received her undergraduate degree in Music from Houghton College, Houghton, NY.

In 1982, she received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Oklahoma and completed her residency training at the University of Tennessee and the University of Pennsylvania, Williamsport, PA.

From 1985 until 1995, she began and directed a group family practice, which then combined with Dr. Daniel Jass' practice, to form the residency practice base. During that ten-year period, she also served as a clinical instructor in family medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and received a clinical faculty teaching award in 1994 from UMDNJ/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Dr. Lansing is a member and fellow of the National Institute for Program Director Development (NIPDD) and a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine. She is also certified in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. Today she practices both family medicine and psychotherapy.

Her book, Treating People with Chronic Disease, A Psychological Guide, was co-authored with psychoanalyst Carol Goodheart and published by the American Psychological Association in 1996. Today the book is used around the country as a text in courses on treating people with chronic medical illness. In addition, she has published articles on various other topics.

Currently she holds active staff privileges at Capital Health System where she practices and serves on various committees.

She is listed in the National Register's Who's Who in Executives and Professionals and is one of six Mercer County physicians who are faculty members of University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School who has been named to New York Magazine's Best Doctors of 2002 and 2003.

Alan H. Remde, MD
Assistant Professor

Dr. Remde received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Cook College at Rutgers University. He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree at UMDNJ - New Jersey Medical School in 1985 and did his residency training at Somerset Family Medicine, Somerville, NJ. In addition, he completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the Institute for Sports Medicine in Hamilton, NJ.

Dr. Remde is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and is certified in Primary Care Sports Medicine. He joined Dr. Lansing's practice in 1988. Dr. Remde became a Clinical Instructor at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 1989 and Assistant Clinical Professor in Family Medicine in 1995. His research interests are centered on psychosomatic and preventive medicine.

Dr. Remde completed an intensive course in Botanical Medicine held at Columbia University.

Jabbar B. Zafar, DO
Assistant Professor

Dr. Zafar received his undergraduate degree in Psychobiology from New York University. He completed his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine - New York Institute of Technology and he completed a rotating internship at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Zafar completed his residency in Family Medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, St. Peter's Medical Center in New Brunswick, NJ, where he also served as Chief Resident.

Dr. Zafar is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine. He is a member of both the American Academy of Family Physicians and the New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians.

He maintained a solo practice in Lawrenceville, NJ for three years prior to joining the residency program. He had been a Clinical Instructor at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School since 1994, and is now an Assistant Professor. Dr. Zafar utilizes osteopathic manipulative treatment in a variety of musculoskeletal and sports related conditions. He is a strong advocate for preventive and primary care family medicine.

Dorothy A. Borresen, PhD, APN
Assistant Professor

Dr. Borresen joined the Family Medicine Residency Program as a teacher of behavioral sciences in 1997. She holds a Master's degree in psychiatric mental health nursing from the University of Pennsylvania and a Doctorate in Psychology from Temple University. She completed training at Philadelphia Child Guidance in 1986 and has practiced, trained and supervised family therapy.

Dr. Borresen worked extensively with adolescents and adults with serious mental illness and has been practicing psychotherapy for more than twenty years. Her special interests include chronic medical illness and the treatment of depression and anxiety in the primary care setting. She practices psychotherapy and psychopharmacology in her private practice where she treats adults and adolescents with serious psychiatric illnesses. Her special interest is bipolar spectrum disorders in women.

Her book, The Collaborative Psychotherapist, Creating Reciprocal Relationships with Medical Professions, was co-authored with Nancy Ruddy and William Gunn and was published by the American Psychological Association in 2008. It will be a text in graduate programs in psychology, counseling and social work and clinical internships.

Deborah Ginsburg, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor

Dr. Ginsburg was awarded her undergraduate degree in Biology with highest honors from the University of California at Santa Cruz. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and completed her residency training in Family Medicine at Glendale Adventist Medical Center in Glendale, California.

She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine. Before joining our residency program, Dr. Ginsburg worked in private practice for three years.

Her special interests are natural medicine and women's health, including maternity care.

Ruppert A. "Tony" Hawes, MD
Assistant Professor

Dr. Hawes received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Denison University. He completed his Doctor of Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Hawes completed his residency at the Richland Memorial Hospital / University of South Carolina Family Medicine Residency Program in Columbia, South Carolina.

Dr. Hawes completed a Fellowship in Academics and Obstetrics in the Department of Family Medicine at Highland Hospital / University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. During this Fellowship, he participated in a special project as an Associate Medical Editor for the revision of the third edition of the slide set for the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) course syllabus.

Dr. Hawes has served as a faculty physician with the Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency Program in Concord, North Carolina with an academic appointment in the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center, in Durham, North Carolina as a Consulting Associate.

Dr. Hawes is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine. He has been an active member at the local and national levels of the American Academy of Family Physicians, as well as the National Medical Association. His special interests in medicine include woman's health and family centered maternity care.
