Fellowship Track
The residency offers eligible second and third year residents an opportunity to follow a fellowship track* where every two weeks during certain rotations, the residents devote one half-day session to a particular field.
GERIATRICS
The Geriatrics Fellowship Program has been an ACGME accredited program since 1987 and has graduated 54 geriatricians. In 2006, with the support of the Francis E. Parker Memorial Homes (www.FrancisEParker.com), the program was integrated into the recently-established Center for Healthy Aging at Parker Stonegate of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Department of Family Medicine. The training includes ambulatory care, long-term care, and acute inpatient care with experiences in Geropsychiatry, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Palliative, and Hospice Care. Fellows gain skills in administration, medical directorship, and education and upon completion are eligible for a certificate of added qualification (CAQ) in Geriatrics.
SPORTS MEDICINE
The Sports Medicine Fellowship has been a fully ACGME accredited program since 1991. The fellowship includes a wide range of sports medicine experiences: high school and college sports; mass participation sports events; and numerous outpatient clinics. Fellows work at Rutgers and Princeton Universities. The fellowship provides specialized education in sports medicine and exercise related injuries, training fellows to provide skills in clinical care, teaching, research, and administration. Upon completion of training, fellows are eligible to sit for a certificate of added qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine.
HEALTH POLICY
This program is a unique, practical opportunity for family physicians, as well as other primary care physicians, to learn how state health policy is developed, and how laws and regulations governing health care are crafted, negotiated and implemented. The health policy fellow serves as both aide and advisor to the Chairperson of a New Jersey State Legislative Health Committee. Upon conclusion of the fellowship, the participants have developed a practical and comprehensive understanding of the legislative process and health care policy in New Jersey.
PRIMARY CARE RESEARCH
This National Research Service Award (NRSA) two-year postdoctoral Fellowship program combines research in a multidisciplinary setting with an option of earning a MPH degree. This Fellowship is designed for individuals who want to pursue academic research careers in a primary care discipline. The program offers the option of an "apprenticeship" process in which fellows work as a team member in an ongoing funded research project under the guidance of established research mentors.
WOMEN'S HEALTH
The Women's Health Fellowship Program, developed in 1992, was the first such fellowship in the United States. The program's goals are to develop physicians with expertise in the clinical, educational, and research aspects of women's health; and to develop leaders in women's health care advocacy. The curriculum is customized to meet each fellow's individual needs and enhance their clinical, teaching and research skills. Fellowship venues include local community health centers and several of RWJMS's Specialty Clinics.
OCCUPATIONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL MEDICINE
Hosted by the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute, this two-year residency is designed for licensed physicians who have completed a three-year primary care residency. Residents earn a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree, taking courses in occupational health, occupational epidemiology, toxicology, industrial hygiene, and related areas. Residents also gain practical, administrative, clinical, and research experience in occupational medicine including worker placement, medical surveillance, disability disease prevention, and health promotion.
