DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE

DEVELOPMENTAL MEDICINE PROGRAM

"Improving Service by Teaching and Research"

A. MEDICAL SERVICE: The Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Department of Internal Medicine Developmental Medicine Program provides comprehensive routine, emergency, and consultative healthcare for adults with developmental disabilities. While a clinical problem may initially appear to be neurological or psychiatric in nature, at times a “medical” problem will be found to be the underlying cause (eg infection, constipation, drug toxicity, etc.) Thus, it is our operating philosophy that the evaluation of all “health” problems that are encountered in adults with developmental disabilities, begins with a thorough general medical work-up. If it is determined that specialty services are required (eg neurology, psychiatry, surgical, gyn, etc.) RWJ Developmental Medicine Program affiliated specialist physicians will be consulted. The RWJ Developmental Medicine Program currently operates three teaching clinics, one at the RWJ Medical School in New Brunswick (732-235-7737) and “satellite” clinics at Coventry Family Practice Centre in Phillipsburg, NJ (908- 454-6303) and Somerset Family Practice Center in Somerville, NJ (908 704-3752). Access to Emergency service is available 24 hours/day by calling 908-510-3062. If hospitalization is required, admission to the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, the Warren Community Hospital, Phillipsburg or the Somerset Medical Center in Somerville will be coordinated by the Developmental Medicine Program on-call physician.

B. TEACHING PROGRAM: The Teaching Program of the Developmental Medicine Program addresses the problem of inadequate physician training regarding those complex health disorders frequently encountered in adults with developmental disabilities. Medical students and physicians-in-training might therefore be present during clinic visits or Attending rounds in the hospital.
C. RESEARCH: The Developmental Medicine Program is actively engaged in clinical research designed to improve physician knowledge concerning evaluation and treatment of health problems which are known to occur in adults with developmental disabilities. Access to publications and information on research programs can be found on the internet at http://www2.umdnj.edu/forumweb/DMP.htm.
