DEVELOPMENTAL MEDICINE REVIEWS &
REPORTS
The "on-line" journal, Developmental Medicine Reviews and Reports was created in 1998 to stimulate interest regarding those medical conditions which frequently occur in adults with "developmental-onset chronic brain disorders"--- brain disorders which first occur while the brain is still developing, that is before age 21 years.
There are hundreds of different inherited or acquired "medical" causes (etiologies) of "developmental-onset chronic brain disorders": for example Down Syndrome, Angelman Syndrome, PKU, Tuberous Sclerosis, Congenital Rubella Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Septo-Optic Dysplasia, and birth injury. Many of these disorders are not limited to the brain and have additional multisystem manifestations as well.
Medical complications/clinical conditions which occur as a result of developmental-onset brain injury include--cognitive dysfunction, seizures, skeletal muscle dysfunction, and severe maladaptive behaviors, There are many additional secondary/tertiary complications as well, such as dysphagia, gastroesophageal reflux, constipation, Helicobacter Pylori gastritis, aspiration pneumonia, and osteoporosis.
