Sexual
health is a fundamental human right and need, as important to the individual
as other physical or mental health needs. The Human Sexuality Program aims to
foster and promote greater awareness of this fundamental need, and to develop
core clinical skills such as sexual history taking and problem identification.
The Human Sexuality program consists of expert presentation on specific topics,
interactive panel discussions, elective workshops, evening programs and small
group discussions throughout the week. The small groups are an essential and
unique aspect of the week.
The
Human Sexuality Program is offered jointly by the Department of Psychiatry and
the Department of Environmental and Community Medicine of UMDNJ - Robert Wood
Johnson Medical School.
Dr.
Richard J. Cross directed the Human Sexuality Program from 1972 to 1986, and
continued to participate actively in the course until his death last year. His
understanding of the role of cultural-sensitivity and interdisciplinary education
in human sexuality, as well as his emphasis on small-group teaching, are the
enduring legacy of his leadership. These aspects remain a central focus of the
course.
