This is a paragraph of text. You can use this paragraph for the introduction to your web page.

There are several points to keep in mind when designing a successful web page:

The following hypertext links contain useful information to UMDweb publishers:

  1. Frequently asked questions and answers for WWW publishers at UMDNJ
  2. Web Page Design Resources
  3. Resources from the World Wide Web Consortium
  4. Netscape Navigator Gold's Authoring Guide. For the latest version, choose Handbook from Netscape Navigator's Help menu for current information and new feature list.
  5. For more in-depth information about HTML, this Beginner's Guide provides an excellent tutuorial.
  6. Guide to Writing HTML
  7. Here is an interesting web site that effectively complements a printed book entitled The City of Bits
  8. Read a Dilbert cartoon when you are done working!

Setting up your ACS account so you can publish WWW documents

  1. Log into your UMDNJ ACS Unix account. Select the link below next to the computer name on which you have your account:
    Campus Host Name
    Newark njmsa (www)
    Piscataway rwja (www2)
    Stratford pearl (www3)
    Camden rwjcam (www4)
  2. From the ACS main menu, choose UNIX Commands. At the Command? prompt, type webme. If you have not created web pages before, a directory (named www) will be created inside of which you may store your web pages.
  3. After you have created your web pages, place them in your www directory. You must type the webme command again in order to allow other people to read your HTML files If you do not do this, you will see a 403 Forbidden... error message on your web browser when you try and access the file. Be aware that your HTML file name must end in .htm or .html in order to be served properly.
  4. To access your files, use the following URL:

    http://host.umdnj.edu/~acctname/file.html

You may look at the slides used during the class if you were unable to attend or want to review them.
A self-paced, on-line tutorial is available that explains how to publish a web page. If you are asked for a user name and password, type "guest" for both to take the tutorial.
Your feedback about the class is always appreciated! You may also send comments by e-mail to: www@umdnj.edu
