Research Interests
My lab is continuing our work to understand how the Type I interferon
receptor on cells differentially recognizes and responds to the range
of Type I interferons, including 13 or more alpha interferons, beta interferon,
omega interferon, and others.
We have recently applied the knowledge derived from our analysis of interferon:receptor
interactions to design novel interferon-derived Type I interferon antagonists
(Pan et al. 2008. Biochemistry 47, 12018-27). Since the inappropriate
expression of Type I interferons appears to be part of the pathogenesis
of several autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus),
and Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes, as well as in several animal models of
these diseases, there is great interest in developing novel interferon
antagonists as research tools and possibly as human therapeutics. We are
trying to develop improved human and mouse interferon antagonists and
to initiate in vivo studies with these antagonists to better understand
the role of interferon in these diseases, and to possibly develop therapeutic
molecules for clinical use.
