Letter to Applicant
August
2007
Dear Residency Applicant:
Thank you for your interest in our Neurology Training Program. For
over 20 years, we have served as a rotation site for the neurology
residency at New Jersey Medical School in Newark. Our own freestanding
program will begin in July 2008.
We offer a three-year (“advanced”) program in Neurology. You
will have to arrange a PGY-1 year in internal medicine separately. For
the initial PGY-2 class entering in July 2008, we will not utilize
the Neurology Matching Program (NRMP), but will utilize the NRMP for
2009 and thereafter.
Residents interested in applying to our program to begin their PGY2
year in July 2008 will need to provide the following documentation:
- Application form
- Curriculum Vitae
- Personal Statement of up to 300 words indicating your interests
and career goals
- Copy of USMLE Parts 1 and 2 scores
- Copy of ECFMG certificate (for IMGs)
- Copy of visa (for IMGs)
- Official copy of medical school transcript and documents certifying
completion of any postgraduate training
- Three letters of recommendation – one of which must be from
someone who can attest to your capabilities and interest in Neurology
- A comprehensive recommendation letter from your Dean’s office
and from previous or current residency program directors, if applicable
To apply to our program for July 2009, applications should be submitted
through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) of the
National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Please follow the
link to the ERAS system www.aamc.org/eras.
ERAS accepts applications beginning September 1. After a preliminary
review of your completed application, you will be contacted via e-mail
if you are being considered for an interview. Interviews are
by invitation only and will be scheduled from November through late
January.
We will consider IMGs and will accept only J-1 visas.
We impose no minimum USMLE scores. The State of New Jersey
imposes a maximum of seven years between passing USMLE 1 and USMLE
3. Passing USMLE 3 is required for entry into the PGY-3 year. Therefore,
you can take USMLE 3 during either your PGY-1 or PGY-2 year.
We look forward to hearing from you as you begin this exciting phase
of your medical career. If you have any questions about the
program, please contact Janet Ryan, our Residency Coordinator, at
(732) 235-7731.
