The following rates should be used when calculating all grant budgets.

Salaries

  • Current salaries should be increased by 4% for each grant year.
  • Postdoctoral Salaries: Link here to get the most recent announcement on NRSA postdoctoral stipend levels - NRSA Rates.  Current NRSA Rates as posted in the NIH Guide, March 14, 2007 are:

Fringe Benefits

  • Full-time employees or part-time employees making more than $5,000: 34% of requested salary.
  • Postdoctoral Fellows - 8% of salary plus $2,328/year for health insurance. Note: $5,340/year is the cost of health insurance for the postdoc and one dependent; $6,780 is the cost of health insurance for the postdoc and two or more dependents. Each of these amounts should be increased by $53 for the postdoc's life insurance.  (Some NIH institutes may only fund an individual's health insurance, not family coverage.)
  • Graduate students or part-time employees making less than $5,000: 8% of requested salary. Budgets supporting graduate students should include the student health insurance fee ($1,821/year) and student clinic ($300/year) in addition to the $24,000 annual stipend amount.  These figures should be increased by 4% in each successive year.
  • Non-salary annual increases: 4% on non-salary expenses; 5% over current rates for research animal facility charges
  • Modified Total Direct Cost (MTDC) base excludes equipment, patient care costs, student tuition, and the amount over the first $25,000 on each subcontract.
  • The salary used for NIH grants should be the academic base (do not include the faculty practice component) and it should be increased by 4% each year. The maximum salary is currently $191,300 for NIH grants.

Indirect Costs/Facilities and Administrative Costs

  • Federal Negotiated Rate applicable to all federally sponsored research grants, contracts and other agreements (DHHS Agreement Dated: October 19, 2006). All rates apply to direct costs not including equipment or patient care costs.
