BIOMEDICAL CAREERS PROGRAM (BCP)

The Biomedical Careers Program (BCP) began in 1978 to serve undergraduate students by offering an intensive six-week summer academic enrichment program in the sciences and health care oriented activities.  The Program is sponsored by Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (a division of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey), Rutgers University (New Brunswick campus), and the New Jersey Educational Opportunity Fund.  Designed to increase the academic preparedness and facilitate the entry of students into medical or other health professional schools, BCP offers an academic program with three levels and six different curricula designed for students at various stages of their undergraduate education.  The academic component consists of science courses, relevant laboratory, research, and clinical experiences as well as cognitive skills seminars and MCAT prep for medical school admissions.  The support component consists of career counseling and seminar series which include some of the following topics, applying to health professional schools, interviewing for health professional schools, financial aid, cultural competency, professionalism, healthy living, stress management, legal, civic and social responsibility.  The program also includes recruitment fair and panel discussions with students and health professionals.

ELIGIBILITY

Academic Requirements:
Following are the minimum course requirements which must be completed by the start of the program.  Courses may be in progress at the time of application; however, in such cases the Admissions Committee may require a grade report prior to making a decision.

Minimum Requirements:

  • One year of college
  • One semester of introduction to biology
  • One semester of introduction to math

Placement of students in Levels I, II or III will be based on an evaluation of each student’s overall academic record, including all courses taken and performance in these courses.  We welcome students who have previously participated in Level I or Level II of the BCP to reapply for admission to a more advanced level.

COLLEGE CREDIT

The Biomedical Careers Program may be taken for credit.  Three credits for the six week curriculum are offered through Rutgers University and may be transferred to other colleges.  Since each level has a separate course number, students may earn credit for each level.  (However, individual colleges and departments should be consulted for any limitations.)

COURSE CREDIT AND HOUSING

  • There is no charge to attend BCP.  Non-EOF students must pay for housing, insurance and course credit.
  • EOF students will receive funding to cover out of pocket expenses.
  • Housing is available.
  • Students who wish to earn college credit through Rutgers University must pay a registration fee and may have to pay a partial tuition charge depending on state residency.

Special consideration and funding will be given to EOF students.

Because the Biomedical Careers Program is supported by New Jersey state institutions, priority will be given to:

  • Students enrolled at Rutgers University (New Brunswick, Newark or Camden campuses),
  • EOF – eligible students enrolled at any four year college in New Jersey,
  • Students who are legal residents of New Jersey who are enrolled in college in any state.
