Summer
Science Scholars Academy
The Summer Science Scholars Academy (S3A) is a new highly competitive program for high school students entering grades 11 and 12. The Office of Special Academic Programs has administered high school enrichment programs since 1998. The academy offers a series of lectures, laboratories, clinical experiences, and a community service component. Students participate in an intensive four-week summer program that utilizes lecture format, laboratory experiences, small group activities, and cognitive skills sessions to enhance knowledge and skills. The combination of activities is designed to expand the participant’s academic abilities and ease the transition into college and health professional fields.
S3A I
Eligibility
Students entering 11th or 12th grade who have not previously participated in S3A I are eligible to apply.
Curriculum
The curriculum focuses on exploring the human body through a series of lectures, organ laboratories, and clinical experiences.
The following will be covered:
- Anatomy
- Cardiovascular System
- Respiratory System
- Gastrointestinal System
- Central Nervous system

- SAT Strategies
- Cognitive and Study Skills
- Health/Medical Professions Seminar
- College Prep Workshops
- Community Service Opportunities
Tuition
Tuition for the Summer Science Scholars Academy is $3,000.
S3A II
Eligibility
S3A I alumni and students graduating in the current academic year are eligible to apply.
Curriculum
This is an exciting expansion of the S3A I program. The program will feature college level science lectures and labs as well as research and public health components. This curriculum is designed to build on the clinical and academic foundations established in the S3A I Program.
The following courses will be covered:
- College Level Biology Lecture and Lab
- Public Health
- Research Methods in Health
- Study Skills
Tuition
Tuition for S3A I alumni is $2,800
Tuition for S3A I non-alumni graduating seniors is $3,000
General Information

S3A I and S3A II session dates are: June 30 - July 25, 2008.
Housing
Housing is optional for $166.50 per week.
Students reside on the Rutgers University Busch Campus located adjacent to RWJ Medical School
Parking
Parking: $1.00 (commuters); $80.25 (housing residents)
Application
Students wishing to apply for the Summer Science Scholars Academy must submit the following:
Completed application
- Letter of recommendation from high school teacher or guidance counselor (not applicable to S3A I alumni)
- Essay
- Official high school transcript
Application deadline is April 1. Admission to the academy is highly selective.
