NEPHROPATHOLOGY DIVISION

The Nephropathology Division offers a variety of specialized procedures, including renal biopsy pathology, direct immunofluorescence and diagnostic electron microscopy.

Tetsuo Shimamura, M.D., Ph.D. is a nephropathologist with nearly three decades of experience in renal pathology. He provides expertise in immunofluoresence, light and electron microscopy, and has published extensively in these areas.

Specimen Requirements:

bulletTissues should be submitted in the appropriate fixatives: buffered 2% glutaraldehyde for electron microscopy, preferably 4% paraformaldehyde or 10% formalin for light microscopy, and Zeus fixative for immunofluorescence (we will provide fixatives at your request, see below).
bulletProvide clinical history (we will provide you with a clinical history form)
bulletProvide phone number and fax number

Results:
We will call or fax final results usually within 4 full working days. When indicated, preliminary verbal results will be provided on the following day for renal biopsy specimens received before 4 PM and on the same day for specimens received before 11 AM.

Specimen Transport:

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (Ms. Martha Smith -phone: 732-937-8732)  will provide collection protocols, fixatives, request forms, clinical history forms, shipping containers, and pre-printed shipping airbills upon request. Specimen transport is provided by Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at no additional cost to our clients.

Checklist for Specimen Submission

  1. Submit tissue in appropriate fixatives:
        2% glutaraldehyde for electron microscopy
        4% paraformaldehyde or 10% formalin for light microscopy
  2. Zeus fixative for immunofluorescence
  3. Provide a clinical history.
  4. Provide contact information including a phone number and fax. If appropriate please also include a pager number
