In 1995 a sister hospital arrangement was inaugurated between Zhong
Shan Hospital in Shanghai and the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital
in New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA. A group of five representatives from
Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital visited Shanghai (left below, Mr.
Greene, Dr. Trelstad, Ms. Burgis, Mr. Holzberg, and Dr. Gorrie). During
that visit plans were laid to develop a 'telemedicine' linkage between the
two institutions.
In 1998 a functional linkage of the two hospitals was successfully engineered
by Dr. David J. Foran of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine
at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr. Foran is Director of the Center
for Biomedical Imaging at Robert Wood Johnson and was supported in this
effort by Dr. Robert L. Trelstad, Professor (1981-) and Chair (1981-1998)
of Pathology and Dr. John Nosher, Professor and Chair of Radiology. Financial
support from the New Jersey side of the project was provided through efforts
of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Johnson & Johnson and
the Departments of Pathology and Radiology.
During 1998, Dr. Peng from the Department of Radiology at Zhong Shan
Hospital has been in New Jersey working with Drs. Foran, Nosher and Trelstad.
Imaging systems with appropriate digitizing capabilities and Internet linkage
capable of sending photomicrographs of pathology specimens along with X-rays,
CAT or MRI scans and real-time video and audio is now in place. The image
at the top of the page in higher magnification
is a composite from such a session showing histopathology, X-rays and an
MRI scan.
