Patients Served

As part of the New Jersey Statewide Family Centered HIV Care Network, RWJAP is committed to providing comprehensive family centered care.    Since 1983, over 900 children and adults have been cared for by the Robert Wood Johnson AIDS Program.  The program has grown from serving one patient in 1983 to 201 patients in 2005 (Fig. 1).  Recent increases in the number of HIV + patients served is a direct result of RWJAP’s efforts to encourage the HIV + biological mothers of our exposed infants to follow-up with care for themselves at our site and through the recently formed Perinatal Collaborative Project (Fig. 2) (see Spotlight p. 7).

Improved treatment regimes for HIV infected children has resulted in decreased mortality of the pediatric patients served by RWJAP.  In 2005 the mean age of infected children increased to 13.79 years and we lost only one patient to an AIDS related death (Fig. 3 and 4.)  RWJAP strives to meet the needs of this “aging up” perinatally infected population by providing peer support groups, treatment adherence groups, and transition groups.  These programs  provide youth with the necessary tools to deal with HIV related psychosocial issues and to transition to adulthood.
