Research Opportunities for Interns

The following provides a sample of research opportunities for interns:

  1. Lesley Allen, Ph.D. has two major research projects – 1) Assessing the efficacy of cognitive behavior therapy for somatization disorder and 2) Assessing the efficacy of cognitive behavior therapy for menopausal hot flashes.

  2. Roseanne Dobkin, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist who specializes in helping patients with Parkinson’s disease and their families cope with the non- motor aspects (i.e., depression, anxiety, sleep) of the medical condition. She is currently conducting a 14 week randomized controlled trial of cognitive- behavioral therapy vs. standard medical care for the treatment of depression in Parkinson’s disease. Interns have the opportunity to conduct individual CBT, supportive caregiver educational sessions, neuropsychological testing, and diagnostic evaluations as part of this rotation.

  3. Alejandro Interian, Ph.D. is evaluating a cognitive-behavior therapy manual that is specifically geared for treating Hispanics with Major Depression. The treatment is typically conducted in Spanish, consists of 10-12 sessions, and is conducted in the primary care setting.

  4. Paul Lehrer, Ph.D. – is involved in training and research in biofeedback, which involves training some of the body’s self-regulatory systems that strengthen resistance against a variety of physical and emotional disorders. Research thus far has focused on asthma, hypertension, fibromyalgia, inflammatory processes, and depression.

  5. Marc Steinberg, Ph.D. is involved in therapy development for substance abuse problems, especially related to motivational interviewing, dual diagnosis, smoking, and integrating mental health and substance abuse treatment perspectives and approaches.
