The
first year of the program is a flexible internship integrated into the four-year
postgraduate program. The internship year is designed to consolidate the
new physician’s knowledge and skills in primary care medicine. The
year provides the opportunity for the intern to develop a strong identity
as a responsible physician through the care of patients in the general hospital
setting. The first year includes a three month rotation in Internal Medicine
at nearby Robert Wood Johnson University
Hospital. There is also an accompanying month long rotation in the Emergency Department at this facility. In
addition, there is a two month rotation in Neurology at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, which provides inpatient,
outpatient and consultative experience. The first year also includes an immersive experience with geriatric patients, especially during their time in the two month rotation at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Lyons, NJ. Here, the PGY I experiences the treatment of patients with long-standing psychiatric illnesses. One month of the rotation is spent in the HARP program, and the other in the CORE program. Residents are also exposed to the evaluation and treatment of a spectrum of psychiatric disorders while rotating two to three months on the adult inpatient unit at the University Behavioral Healthcare (UBHC), Piscataway Campus.
The
PGY-I resident spends two months on the psychiatric consultation service
of the Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
The resident works as a member of a team, consisting of an attending psychiatrist, nurse practitioner, and medical students. Patient diagnoses vary between
from organic brain syndromes, somatization disorders and major psychiatric
illnesses.
