Clinical Research

The Department of Psychiatry continues to expand both federally and industry funded research. Examples of such research activities include psychotherapy research (CBT) in somatization disorder, the Latino Research Program, treatment outcomes in substance abuse, biofeedback for asthma, inheritance in alcohol dependence and multiple industry sponsored drug trials. Residents are actively encouraged to become familiar with ongoing projects and, if desired, develop a “mentor” relationship with a clinical researcher.

The research experience begins in the second year with a ten-week clinical research curriculum, conducted by various faculty. During the second and third years, the resident will design and carry out a project under the direct supervision of a research faculty “mentor”. Residents are expected to design and conduct a research project during their residency. At the completion of their fourth year, they will be required to present their project and results during departmental grand rounds.
