Below are some useful suggestions for those of you who wish to improve
the efficiency of your InfoRetriever installations. We have
suggestions for both Palm and PocketPC. In addition, we explain how
you can make Registration of InfoRetriever easier for you when you are
installing InfoRetriever on many devices at once.
Palm OS Devices - Install in as little as 3 minutes!
----------------------------------------------------With InfoRetriever 2004, we introduced a new Installer program for Palm
OS devices that makes individual installations a breeze. However,
installation time via a traditional HotSync operation varies greatly,
anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes or more. We have two suggestions for
cutting that time down to as little as three minutes.
* Purchase a "Professional" grade memory card *We have found that the installation time of InfoRetriever on Palm OS is
largely dependent on the quality and speed of the memory card that is
used in the device. In our experience, the complete process of a
normal Installation takes less than three minutes when a SanDisk Ultra
II SD card (http://www.sandisk.com/retail_ultraII.html) is used in the
handheld device (in contrast to 15-90 minutes with other SD cards).
Such "Professional" grade memory cards are available for most types of
memory cards, and they are typically a bit more expensive than other
memory cards. However, the additional cost provides greatly enhanced
reading and writing speed.
* Utilize a USB memory card reader to install to PalmOS devices *Individual users installing InfoRetriever will likely find this
installation method a bit too complicated, but if you install and
maintain InfoRetriever on multiple devices, it can save you a great
deal of time. The only extra equipment that you need is a USB memory
card reader that can read/write to the type of external memory that
your handhelds use. You may wish to consider a card reader that can
read multiple types of memory cards, such as this one:
http://www.sandisk.com/retail_sixinone.html.Follow these steps to install InfoRetriever on your Palm OS handhelds:
-- Download the ZIP version of InfoRetriever for Palm OS. See "Manual
Palm Installation (Alternative Download Method)" on
http://www.infopoems.com/infopoems/download_palm.cfm. Or, to take
advantage of the single registration code as described below, obtain
the special ZIP file from an InfoPOEMs support representative.
-- Extract the files from the ZIP archive to the computer from which
you will be installing InfoRetriever to your devices. This should
create a file called InfoRetriever.prc and a folder called PALM_VDF.
(You may need to install a program to handle ZIP files, such as 7-zip
-- http://www.7-zip.org.)-- Install the InfoRetriever.prc file to each handheld via HotSync, as
you would any other PRC file for Palm OS.-- Install the InfoRetriever data files to each device's memory card:
Insert the memory card into your USB card reader, and copy the PALM_VDF
folder, in its entirety, to the memory card (do not place the PALM_VDF
folder inside any other folders on the card). Refer to your card
reader's manual for assistance.-- Insert the memory card with the PALM_VDF folder into the handheld,
which has already had the InfoRetriever PRC file installed to it. Run
InfoRetriever by tapping on the IR icon, and perform a few searches to
verify that it functions properly.
** Be sure to register InfoRetriever on each device so that it will not
cease to function after the built-in 30-day trial period. (Also see
below.)(Please note that we are not endorsing any particular product. The
products mentioned here are examples of the type of technology that we
recommend for efficient installations of the InfoRetriever program to
Palm OS devices.)
PocketPC Devices - Mass Installs without ActiveSync
---------------------------------------------------If you are installing InfoRetriever to the Internal Memory of a number
of PocketPC devices, you can avoid using ActiveSync for each
installation, and thus reduce the time required to install
InfoRetriever. This technique involves using the CAB file version of
the InfoRetriever for PocketPC installation, and using a single
external memory card to install to each device.Follow these steps:
(NOTE: This method will only work if you wish to install InfoRetriever
to the Internal Memory of your PocketPC devices. You must perform the
normal installation in order to install InfoRetriever to External
Memory.)-- Download the CAB file version of InfoRetriever for PocketPC. See
"CAB File Download (Alternate Install Method)" on
http://www.infopoems.com/infopoems/download_pocketpc.cfm. Or, to take
advantage of the single registration code as described below, obtain
the special CAB file from an InfoPOEMs support representative.-- Change the attributes of the CAB file to be "Read-Only". To do so,
locate the CAB file on your desktop computer, RIGHT-CLICK on the CAB
file, and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab, locate the
"Attribute:" section, and ensure that the "Read-Only" checkbox is
checked. Then click "OK".-- Copy the CAB file to the external memory card that you have chosen
to use for installation. You can perform the copy by inserting the
card into a PocketPC device and using ActiveSync, or by using a USB
memory card reader. </li><br>-- For each PocketPC device on which you want to install
InfoRetriever, insert the memory card into the device, and locate the
CAB file using the File Explorer. Tap on the CAB file to install
InfoRetriever to the internal memory of the PocketPC device.-- When the installation has completed, the CAB file should remain on
the memory card. Remove the memory card from the device, then insert
it into the next PocketPC device on which you want to install
InfoRetriever. Repeat the installation process on each PocketPC device.**NOTE: If the CAB file disappears from the memory card after the
first installation, that means it was not properly set to Read-Only.
Be sure that you followed the instructions above for making the CAB
file Read-Only.** Be sure to register InfoRetriever on each device so that it will not
cease to function after the built-in 30-day trial period. (Also see
below.)
