Library Services
Reference Services
Professional reference service is available seven days a week. A full range of library services is provided by the staff to aid patrons in obtaining information. Those requiring guidance in the use of the online catalog, assistance in locating books, journals and computer software, or orientation to services and programs provided by the Library can obtain this information from the reference staff.
Library users are encouraged to learn to do their own computerized literature searches using any of the searching options the Library has available. The Library provides mediated literature searches for patrons who are interested in this service.
Interlibrary LoanInterlibrary loan is a service provided to registered library patrons to obtain materials not available at our campus library. Books, theses and some materials in microform may be borrowed. Photocopies may be requested for non-circulating materials, primarily journal articles. Allow at least one week from the date submitted to receive materials. Items available in other UMDNJ libraries may be received within two to three days. Interlibrary loans are usually free, but some may require payment of a $11.00 fee. Interlibrary loan request forms are available at the Circulation Desk. For further information, please contact Dianne Hamlette at 732-235-7610.
Course Offerings
Instructional classes in searching bibliographic databases have been developed by library reference staff and are offered on a regular basis. A schedule of classes is posted periodically through UMDWeb and also on the RWJ Library's home page. Contact Kerry O'Rourke at 732-235-7606 for further information.
Online Resources
Remote Access
Library registration provides remote access to the UMDNJ Libraries' electronic resources. When using the remote access service, your Username is your Last Name and your Password is the last four digits of your University ID number. For more information, see http://www.umdnj.edu/librweb/access/.
University Libraries Online Catalog
The UMDNJ Libraries maintain an integrated library system that serves both UMDNJ Library and staff. Its main feature is the web-based Online Catalog.
The Online Catalog allows users to locate books, audiovisuals, journals and other materials owned by any of the four UMDNJ Libraries. It is searchable by Authors, Titles, Subjects, and Keywords (any combination of author, title or subject). Instruction in the use of the Online Catalog is available during all Library hours.
Ovid
UMDNJ's Ovid system includes the following databases:
ISI
- ISI Current Contents Connect - is a multidisciplinary current awareness Web resource, providing access to complete bibliographic information from over 6,000 scholarly journals and more than 2,000 books and conference proceedings. Updated daily, it includes complete tables of contents and abstracts in addition to the standard bibliographic information. Life Sciences, Clinical Medicine, and Social and Behavioral Sciences collections are made available to UMDNJ users.
- ISI Journal Citation Reports is a database of quantifiable statistical information that provides users with a systematic, objective way to determine the relative importance of journals within their subject categories. TheJCR is the only source of citation data on journals and includes virtually all areas of science, technology, and the social sciences. It lists the journals with the highest impact, most frequent use, and journals on the leading edge of research. The JCR Web of Science Edition 2000 and the JCR Web of Social Sciences Edition 2000 are made available to the UMDNJ community.
- ISI Web of Science is the web-based version of the Science Citation Index Expanded and the Social Sciences Citation Index. It covers over 6,000 U.S. and international, multidisciplinary journals. This database is useful for tracking citations in the published literature with some unique features. Related Records locates articles that have cited references in common; and Times Cited provides a list of articles that cite a source article. Covers 1990 - Present.
VALE
The VALE (Virtual Academic Library Environment) Project is a cooperative initiative funded by New Jersey Higher Education Technology Infrastructure Bond funds, matching institutional funds, and a grant from the New Jersey State Library. The VALE databases include:
Other Databases
- The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews - includes the full text of the regularly updated systematic reviews of the effects of healthcare prepared by The Cochrane Collaboration. The reviews are presented in two types - complete reviews and protocols.
- Commission E Monographs - The western world's only official, government sanctioned authority on
herbal medicines, the German Commission's 380 monographs on single and fixed combination herbs represent today's highest standard in phytomedicinal evaluation. Includes assessments on herbal remedies, quality, safety, efficacy, and clinical applications.
Electronic Textbooks
Electronic Journals
The Library maintains subscriptions to over 13,000 electronic journals.
Computer Lab
The Library maintains its own local area network with thirty-three(33) computers for patron use. Three of these computers are located outside the Library for use 24 hours a day. All of these workstations have full Internet/World Wide Web access. From the Library's home page (www2.umdnj.edu/rwjlbweb), library patrons can connect to bibliographic and full text databases, electronic journals and reviewed Internet sites.
