How to Make a Referral
Procedure
To consult with a member of the SACC, you can be the student him/herself (self referral), friend, colleague, family member, faculty member, school administrator, or health professional.
You can refer a student by contacting any member of the SACC.
- Your name is not reported to other members of the committee.
- Confidentiality may not be maintained in certain situations,
e.g., situations involving threat-to-life or child abuse.
You should provide specific information on the behavior of the student. These may include any of the following:
- Unusual or inappropriate behavior.
- Withdrawal from or disinterest in friends and activities.
- Frequent or unexplained absences or tardiness
- Depressed mood
- Significant inability to handle routine challenges.
- Unusual weight gain or loss.
- Use of drugs or alcohol
What Happens after a Referral Is Made:
If a committee member receives a report of impairment in a referred student, two members of the committee will meet privately with the referred student to present their concerns. You may be asked to attend this meeting on a voluntary basis.
The full committee will review the information. However, your name as well as the name of the referred student will not be given to the committee.
The committee has a basic interest to assure that students get appropriate help. The committee has the option of referring a student who refuses help or fails to comply with treatment to the Dean of Students. In cases involving health and safety, e.g., potential suicide or child abuse cases, the committee may take immediate action to prevent harm to students or others.
