The following is a list of recommended fellowship programs:

All Indian Institute of Medical Students

The Institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research and patient-care. As provided in the Act, AIIMS conducts teaching programs in medical and para-medical courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and awards its own degrees.

American India Foundation Service Corps Fellowship

The Fellowship annually selects approximately 20 outstanding young Americans who have demonstrated an interest in India and possess leadership and professional skills that will allow them to contribute effectively to Indian non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Fellows are placed with leading NGOs who work in a variety of fields, including but not limited to, primary education, micro-credit, HIV/AIDS and human rights. Fellows work on a variety of projects ranging from community organizing to business planning to research surveys to public advocacy. Each Fellow is assigned a mentor at their host organization to guide their projects.

All Fellows receive a monthly stipend that includes money for living, housing, food and transport. Fellows also receive supplemental health insurance coverage and travel to and from India. During the program year, AIF's staff in India provides on-going training and support, including a ten-day orientation and midpoint and endpoint retreats.

American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) Overseas Assistance Grant

This grant provides assistance in transportation costs (up to $1500) to national AMWA members in their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year (medical students and residents) who will be spending a minimum of 6 weeks, and no longer than a year, in a sponsored program benefiting the medically underserved.

Association of Families and Friends of RWJMS
International Study Grant for First Year Students

This association generously contributes grant money for international studies in developing countries for first year students. This money is intended for use by students during the summer following their first year. Students must submit a completed application as well as all additional documentation. This application can be obtained at the Office of Student Affairs or below. Application deadline is May 1.

GHEC Travel Scholarship

The Carole Davis IHMEC Scholarship is given to a student or faculty member from a school that is an institutional member of GHEC. The award will be based on a statement no more than 1,000 words that describes the international health activity for which the applicant will use the funding. The project description gives the applicant's background, reason for the international health activity, learning objectives and anticipated outcomes.

Applications must include:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • A statement no more than 1,000 words describing the activity indicating how the funds will be used
  • If a student or resident, please provide a letter from a supervising faculty member.
  • If a faculty member, please provide one letter of support from a colleague familiar with your work.

Application deadline is November 30.

Christian Medical & Dental Associations (CMDA)
Missions Scholarships for 3rd and 4th year medical students

CMDA provides a mission scholarship called the James S. Westra Memorial Endowment Fund for CMDA members in their 3rd or 4th year of medical school wishing to spend time overseas as a rotation elective. These students must be able to demonstrate financial need. The application deadlines are April 1, June 1 and December 1. Awards are announced by mail one month after the deadline. India Elective Travel Scholarship

Thank you for your interest in applying for the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) India Elective Scholarship. We hope this will help you as you gain valuable experiences overseas.

The following are guidelines for applying for these 3 scholarships:

  1. Applicants must be a student, resident or fellow in an accredited US school or training program.
  2. Applicants must be members of the AAPI medical student/resident/fellow section (MSRF).
  3. Scholarships are exclusively for electives in India.
  4. The Academic Affairs committee of AAPI will review applications . The identity of each applicant will kept anonymous to each of the reviewers.
  5. Scholarships will be offered once a year. The deadline is March 1, 2008 for electives to be performed anytime from Jan 1, 2008 through Dec 31, 2008.
  6. Winners will be announced at the annual convention in Las Vegas (June 25-29).

Institute of International Education (IIE)- Fulbright Scholarships

The Fulbright Program offers a variety of grant opportunities including the comprehensive Fulbright grants or Fulbright travel grants for over 140 countries worldwide. The award is for one academic year, only (8-10 months), in a study abroad experience. The stipends differ by country. New application materials for each Fulbright's competition are available annually by May 1. Applications are available online. All materials must be submitted by October 20 to the IIE's New York office to qualify for awards for the next academic year.

MAP International Fellowship

This fellowship is for 3rd and 4th year medical students who participate in a field experience that provides exposure to community health in a 'Christian context'. Students select a mission agency or hospital that has an outreach to the poor in a rural or urban setting. Students must spend at least eight weeks in the field. The fellowship provides 75% of the approved round trip airfare to the destination. The annual deadline to submit an application is March 1. Fellowships are awarded May 1 every year. Dr. Sukumar Nagendran Alumni Fellowship in Global Health

This grant has generously been provided by Dr. Sukumar Nagendran, RWJMS class of 1994, for third and fourth year medical students. It provides funding for medical students at RWJMS to work and study in a health care setting in a medically underserved country. It is hoped that, through this experience, RWJMS graduates will gain an opportunity to become compassionate and altruistic physicians, who are aware of the global disease burden and lack of healthcare resources in developing countries. It is further hoped that future alumni will follow this example of “giving back” to RWJMS.

Criteria are as follows:

Students can apply for a Sukumar Nagendran Alumni Fellowship for elective experiences during their third or fourth year.

Fellowships are between $500 and $1000.
