Internet: A Guide to Information Technology Resource

Class: A130

Length: 3 hours

Platform: Platform: Participants will use computers with Microsoft Windows and/or MacOS operating systems. However, most of the class topics are platform independent.

Description: The Internet is a data communication network used by millions of computers around the world to exchange information with one another.

The World Wide Web (WWW) is a vast collection of information stored on computers connected by the Internet. The WWW is the most popular way to access information using the Internet. Most WWW documents include hypertext links, which are pointers to other WWW documents. These documents may include text, pictures, sounds, movies, and interactive forms.

People involved in research, academics, administration, and clinical work will find it useful to know how to efficiently access information using the Internet in today's information age. Scientific databases (e.g., MEDLARS, TOXNET, and GenBank maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine), clinical journals (e.g., the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report maintained by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), and library information (e.g., holdings at UMDNJ libraries as well as many others around the world) are all examples of resources that can be accessed from the World Wide Web.

Topics:

  • History and evolution of the Internet.
  • Architecture of the Internet (client/server computing, TCP/IP.)
  • Hands-on work with WWW browsing software.
  • Demonstration and advise for searching for information on the WWW.
  • Learn about email, Usenet newsgroups, telnet, ftp, and gopher.
  • Learn how to teach yourself how to use Internet-based tools.

Audience: The course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn how to effectively use World Wide Web and other Internet information resources

Prerequisites: A valid ACS computer account. Experience using electronic mail desirable.


World Wide Web Publishing I

Class: A151

Length: 3 hours

Platform: Participants will use computers with Microsoft Windows and/or MacOS operating systems. However, most of the class topics are platform independent.
Description: This class will teach students how to publish information on the World Wide Web (WWW). Students will learn how information is stored and accessed on the WWW and also how web pages are transferred from one computer to another.

Students should bring to class materials they want published on the WWW. The materials can be files created by a computer program on a computer disk, printed pages, or ideas. These materials could describe who you are, your office functions, or focus on a topic of your own choosing.

Topics:

  • Client/server architecture of the WWW.
  • Brief review of web browsing software.
  • Discuss a general method to create web documents.
  • Organizing and planning a web site.
  • Use a web page editor to create and publish a web page.
  • Examine and discuss differences between web browsers.
  • Survey web sites created by folks at UMDNJ to gain insight into the potential of the WWW.

Audience: The course is suitable for anyone who wants to publish information on the World Wide Web.

Prerequisites: A valid ACS computer account. (A130) Internet: A Guide to Information Technology Resources or equivalent.


World Wide Web Publishing II

Class: A152

Length: 3 hours

Platform: Participants will use computers with Microsoft Windows and/or MacOS operating systems. However, most of the class topics are platform independent.

Audience: Providers and/or maintainers of information stored on the World Wide Web

Description: This class builds on the first World Wide Web Publishing course (A151) and continues exploring topics of interest to publishers of information on the World Wide Web at UMDNJ. This class will offer "webmasters" the opportunity to ask questions that might have arisen from the development of their web sites. General advice for creating effective and useful WWW pages will be given. The class will collectively apply knowledge to troubleshoot problems encountered by participants.

Please bring to class questions you have encountered while creating your web site.

Topics: (based on audience interest)

  • Discuss how to effectively communicate information using the WWW.
  • Learn how to register your WWW site with search engines.
  • Learn how to discover how many people visit your site.
  • Learn how to create interactive forms.
  • Learn ways to limit access to web pages.
  • Learn about the role played by CGI programs/scripts.
  • Discuss when it makes sense to use audio and video
  • Review style guidelines for WWW documents.
  • Survey HTML authoring tools and environments.
  • Survey different image file formats (e.g., transparent, interlaced GIF and progressive JPEG) and discuss how to use them effectively.

Prerequisites: A valid ACS computer account. (A151) World Wide Web Publishing I or equivalent or experience creating web pages. Please bring to class questions you have encountered in creating your WWW site.
