University Diagnostic Laboratory

The University Diagnostic Laboratory (UDL) comprises all clinical laboratories providing service under the auspices of the UMDNJ - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.  The UDL specialty laboratories have all been accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) since 1985.

Our Mission

UMDNJ is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the delivery of health care.

The Robert Wood Johnson Medical School - University Diagnostic Laboratories, as the license holder for all clinical laboratory activities on the campus, seeks to assure the availability of both unique and  specialized testing, as well as insuring the quality of the clinical laboratory testing performed in our many clinical facilities.

Point-of-care testing is the testing and processing of samples at the patient bedside and the inclusion of those real-time results into the patient care process. Point-of-care testing allows the physician to quickly gain a more complete clinical impression, integrate the lab results into the diagnostic process, modify care based on timely lab data, and more easily monitor the results of therapeutic manipulation.  This process is critical today to the successful, operation of an ambulatory facility.

Recognizing the need to provide hospitals throughout New Jersey with laboratory tests of a new and complex character and of the responsibility of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine to serve in a leadership capacity in introducing and evaluating new test procedures to physicians and hospitals, the University Diagnostic Laboratories (UDL) was established in the spring of 1983.  The UDL comprises all clinical laboratories providing service under the auspices of the UMDNJ - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Today, the UDL includes specialty clinical laboratories operated under the licensure of the faculty of the Department of Pathology, as well as all Point of Care Testing activities offered at multiple clinical facilities within Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
